One thing that I hear time and time again is...
"Well my grandparent or parent (most of the time both) was diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes (or one of the four horsemen) and that's why I have it.. it's just genetic."
Our genes are like a lightswitch with a dimmer. Your environmental exposure to things, your daily habits, food choices, amount of exercise you get and stress levels can either turn on or off certain genes. So likely your grandparents and/or parents passed down certain styles of cooking or providing food for the family, stress coping mechanisms, physical exercise habits and ways of living to you. We end up with the same results when we keep making the same choices. March is National Nutrition Month, an observance to bring awareness to nutrition and living a healthier lifestyle so that we can keep certain genes dormant. Here are a couple of things you can do to get started on your health journey this month:
1. Attend one of our health talks or cooking classes at JuiceVibes
2. Skip the grocery store and head to your local farmers market
3. Educate yourself and head to the health & wellness section of your local book store
4. Try cooking a new recipe each week that is centered around vegetables
5. Come see us on Meatless Mondays for yummy plant-based features
